Church of San Montano

The 13th-century church of San Montano in Roccaporena played a key role in the life of St. Rita during the thirty-six years she lived in the locality. The temple, dedicated to St. Montanus, was originally erected in the 12th century and underwent several renovations over the centuries. According to tradition, St. Montanus was a Syrian hermit monk who preached the Gospel in the region. The church, in Romanesque style with Gothic elements on the facade, contains frescoes and altars depicting various saints, including St. Rita. It is also the place where St. Rita received the sacraments and married, and where her husband and children are buried.

The church of San Montano also has a close relationship with the Way of St. Benedict, as it is located in Roccaporena, a town associated with the life of St. Rita and located in the region where St. Benedict of Norcia founded the Benedictine Order. This link is symbolically and culturally significant, as it unites two important religious figures in the history of the region. The church, with its original structure and its many artistic and religious elements, remains a place of devotion and pilgrimage for the faithful and visitors, offering an atmosphere of peace and reflection in its historic and natural setting.
