Church of the Holy Spirit

The Church of the Holy Spirit in Lanciano is a small rural church located near the Santa Rita district. Although its exact origins are uncertain, oral tradition places its foundation in the late 17th century. Historically, it served as a prayer stop and shelter for travelers. The structure has a rectangular floor plan with a simple countryside-style façade, recently restored, featuring a gabled roof, entrance portal, and three windows. A bell gable rises on the left. Inside, the altar follows the pre-Vatican II layout, and a niche contains a valuable icon of Our Lady of Sorrows.

Architectural elements of an adjoining former convent remain visible, including cross-vaulted rooms and sections of brick and stone walls. The rear part of the church is in ruin, overrun by vegetation. The surrounding area still preserves traces of monastic life, such as a well and remains of adjacent rooms. Despite its decay, the church remains a quiet testimony of Lanciano’s devotional and rural heritage.
