Our Lady of Sonsoles Sanctuary

The Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Sonsoles, located four kilometers from the city of Avila, is a Catholic temple of great devotion among the people of Avila and pilgrims from the region. It is located in the area of Serranillo, in the southern part of the Amblés Valley. The original hermitage, dating from the time of the Reconquest, was demolished and rebuilt in the 15th century under the direction of Martín de Solórzano by order of the Brotherhood of Sonsoles. Of Baroque style with Gothic elements, the sanctuary has a structure of three naves, highlighting its ribbed vault in the main altar, where the venerated image of the Virgin of Sonsoles, whose worship dates back to the eleventh century, is located. The sanctuary is also famous for two curious miracles represented inside: a stuffed crocodile and a boat hanging from the ceiling, both associated with local legends.

Devotion to the Virgin of Sonsoles has endured over the centuries, with pilgrimages and festivities that continue to attract many of the faithful. Among the most outstanding are the July and October celebrations, where offerings are made by various brotherhoods. Legend has it that the name “Sonsoles” comes from the exclamation of some shepherds who witnessed the appearance of the Virgin surrounded by light. In addition to its religious importance, the sanctuary has been visited by illustrious figures such as Santa Teresa de Jesús and the painter Valeriano Domínguez Bécquer, who dedicated one of his works to the place.
